New homeowners in town are proof Vicksburg is ready for the spotlight

One of my favorite HGTV shows to watch is “Home Town.” For those of you who are not familiar with the program, its focus is to help would-be homeowners find a house that, after updates, falls within their budget. The HGTV show is hosted by Ben and Erin Napier. The couple lives in Laurel, where the home remodels and redesigns take place.

“Home Town” first aired in 2016 and has since catapulted the Napiers into stardom, which to me indicates I am not the only one who enjoys the show. In fact, “Home Town” has received so much attention, in addition to inspiring locals to purchase and update older homes for sale in their communities, it has also attracted outsiders from across the country.

What a boon for the small Mississippi town.

I applaud the Napiers for their hard work and ingenuity. They have put Laurel, Mississippi on the map.

But you know, Vicksburg is on the map, too.

Many of our historical and vintage homes have attracted outsiders.

I mean just last week, two Texas gentlemen bought the Balfour House.

They may not have seen this historical home on an HGTV series, but the real estate listing sure caught their attention. And in talking to them, not only are they in love with their new home, they are also charmed by our town. One of the new owners said he loved walking into Walnut Hills, where one of the wait-staff already has a bourbon and Coke waiting on him

There are many other folks — I dare not go down the list, lest I leave someone off — that have moved here from other cities or states who were initially attracted to Vicksburg due to properties. And like the men who purchased the Balfour House, they love the River City as much as they do their new homes. I know because they are involved and have become vital parts of the community.

And what about our entrepreneurs that have helped transform the downtown area? People that have lived here all their lives, as well as new faces who, while they are not HGTV stars, have remodeled and reimagined so many dilapidated properties and turned them into beauties?

If HGTV ever wanted to set up shop in Vicksburg, they would have a plethora of people who could play host. Hmm — if only I could put a bug in their ears.

During “Home Town” episodes, in addition to watching the work crew tear down and build back, they also feature a variety of craftsmen and artists, whether they be local or in some other location. Well, you know what? From wood workers to artists to gardeners, we have that, too. So, you wouldn’t even have to leave the city.

I don’t know what kind of name HGTV could give a possible television series that would showcase all the sales and revamps of homes in Vicksburg, but I do know there is an opportunity here just waiting to be had — and in my opinion, it would be watched by millions.
