100 Years Ago: 1924
Mr. and Mrs. V.C. Hammett announced the birth of their daughter. • Henry Williams was in Vicksburg from Bolton. • Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burnett left for New York.
90 Years Ago: 1934
Ike Brown, a former Warren County resident, died in Memphis. • Mrs. J.T. Birdsong left for Chicago. • Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Lehan left for Louisville to visit relatives and friends.
80 Years Ago: 1944
Dr. Harry Ironsides, a noted clergyman, opened a four-day series of services at LeTourneau pre-dedication revival at the Crawford Street Methodist Church. • Mississippi Gov. Thomas Bailey was the guest of honor at the Men’s Bible Class fish dinner at Gibson Memorial Methodist Church.
70 Years Ago: 1954
Services were held for Arthur Segrest. • Mr. and Mrs. William Coomes announced the birth of a son, Kenneth. • The Rev. and Mrs. W.F. Mansell and family moved into their newly purchased home at 1608 Vicklan Street.
60 Years Ago: 1964
Annie Johnson died. • Services were held for Sarah Alexander. • Bob Wilder was named president of the Vicksburg Optimist Club.
50 Years Ago: 1974
Mayor Nat Bullard attended the Municipal Association Legislative Committee meeting in Jackson. • Cora Street received a certificate of appreciation from the Warren County chapter of the American Red Cross, where she had been a volunteer since 1917. • Cadet John C. Franck attended the Army Reserves Officers’ Training Corps Ranger Camp at Fort Benning. • Dr. John W. Edwards, at the age of 87, was presented a plaque that honored him as the oldest living dentist in Mississippi.
40 Years Ago: 1984
Services were held for Flossie Griffith. • Lucy Lee listened to Girl Scouts Kattrina Miller, Christina Rivers, Ellisha Cook and Summer Godfry, who were auditioning for the play “America Sings.” They were accompanied by pianist Anne Yates. • “Cannonball Run II” was showing at the Battlefield Cinema.
30 Years Ago: 1994
Head Start officials were searching for ways to accommodate approximately 250 preschoolers displaced when the Vicksburg Warren School District reclaimed Cedars Elementary.
20 Years Ago: 2004
The City of Vicksburg started accepting credit cards as payments for fees, utilities and police fines at various departments.
10 Years Ago: 2014
The Arthur Street program offered hope and rehabilitation for ex-convicts. • The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra was set to perform at Holy Trinity.
