Speed Street home target of shooting for second time in 3 days

Published 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 1, 2024

For the second time since Sunday night, a home on Speed Street became the target of a barrage of bullets Tuesday afternoon.

Residents of the nearby Fostoria neighborhood said Tuesday’s shooting included “eight to 12 pops” that sounded like they came from a handgun and were clearly targeting the home at 1107 Speed Street.

Sunday night, just before 10 p.m., multiple residents called in reports of as many as a dozen shots at the same location. Residents on Tuesday said Sunday’s gunshots sounded as if they were coming from both handguns and shotguns.

Less than an hour after Sunday’s initial incident, Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) officers were on the scene of another nearby shooting in Marcus Bottom, where residents reported an additional three shots fired.

Tuesday afternoon, VPD Sgt. Jerrold Hayes said one person sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of Tuesday’s incident and was treated at Merit Health River Region. Hayes said VPD could not confirm the home at 1107 was the target of either shooting, nor could he confirm any of the three shootings were connected.

“We’re treating these as three separate incidents,” Hayes said. “We have set up a mobile camera (following Tuesday’s incident) in the 1100 block of Speed Street in order to monitor the area.”

Vicksburg’s Ward 1 Alderman T.J. Mayfield made a trip to the area following the shooting Tuesday to talk with residents of his district and told The Post they have a right to be concerned about the ongoing violence in their neighborhood.

“I’m disappointed and frustrated that this is happening in this community,” Mayfield said. “There’s no place in it for violence and shooting. What we don’t want to happen is for innocent people to get hurt. More than anything, we want the community to feel safe and not be afraid to walk outside.”

Mayfield said he will be on hand Wednesday night for a planned meeting of the Fostoria Neighborhood Association taking place at 5:30 p.m. at Oak Hall Bed and Breakfast on Drummond Street. Members of the Fostoria Neighborhood Association said that while the event is an official meeting of the group, invitations have been extended to residents of Glenwood Circle, Marcus Bottom and other areas affected by the recent rash of shootings.

Hayes said anyone with information regarding any of the shootings is asked to contact VPD at 601-636-2511. Calls may also be made to Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (601-355-8477). All calls are confidential.
