Ole Miss smothers South Carolina for bounceback win

Ole Miss got back in the win column by getting back to what works.

The Rebels’ defense had two takeaways, six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, and held South Carolina to a modest 313 total yards in a dominating 27-3 victory on Saturday.

No. 11 Ole Miss (5-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) bounced back after losing to Kentucky last week by holding South Carolina (3-2, 1-2) without a touchdown for the first time this season.

TJ Dottery had a team-high 13 tackles and a sack for Ole Miss. Suntarine Perkins had 12 tackles and a sack, while Trey Amos had an interception and eight tackles.

Walter Nolen had a spectacular day with a fumble recovery and a team-high three tackles for loss. Jared Ivey added two sacks.

South Carolina failed to reach the end zone on two trips inside the red zone. Its only points came on a 40-yard field goal by Alex Herrera early in the second quarter.

Ole Miss’ offense also missed some opportunities — it had a fumble through the end zone, was 3-for-13 on third down, and quarterback Jaxson Dart only completed 14 of 27 passes for 285 yards — but did enough to take advantage of the dominant defensive effort.

After South Carolina failed to convert on a fake punt from its own 36-yard line, Henry Parrish scored on a 3-yard run to put the Rebels ahead 7-0 less than five minutes into the game.

South Carolina fumbled on its next series, and J.J. Pegues capped an eight-play drive with a 1-yard TD run with 5:57 left in the first that made it 14-0.

Pegues, a 325-pound defensive lineman who also plays running back in short-yardage situations, had another 1-yard TD run in the second quarter as Ole Miss eased to a 24-3 halftime lead.

“He’s so awesome,” Dart said of Pegues. “He’s the only defensive tackle who can move like that in the whole country. He could honestly play tight end for us, too. He’s a special talent.”

Caden Davis’ 44-yard field goal was the only scoring by either team in the second half.

Parrish finished with 81 rushing yards on 21 carries. Dart had 44 yards.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin earned his 100th career victory.

Ole Miss will play at LSU next Saturday.
