Pair of pros: St. Al bids farewell to football program mainstays

During last week’s victory over the Manchester Academy Mavericks, the St. Aloysius family had another reason to celebrate – and reminisce – when two important figures in the football program decided it was time to step down from their positions after decades of service.

For the last 22 seasons of St. Al football, Pat Griffith has run the scoreboard, while Conrad Rabalais – for 23 seasons – has served as the voice of the Flashes, calling all home games from the pressbox.

During halftime of last week’s matchup, a ceremony was held to thank and commemorate the pair, and to give them a proper sendoff into a well-earned retirement.

“These two have truly been a team for the past decades and have provided a service to all who enter our stadium,” St. Al officials said during a message read over the PA system. “As the football season approaches, they contact each other to make the decision to continue running the scoreboard and PA announcing. With these two, it’s an all-in or nothing. Together, they have decided that their service would conclude at the end of the 2024 season.”

St. Al took a few moments to explain the importance each of the two men have had for the program over the past two-plus decades.

“For the past 22 football seasons, Pat has run the scoreboard. Pat, we recognize your outstanding dedication, commitment and precision as the St. Aloysius football scorekeeper. We know you’ve put personal commitments on hold just to spend your Friday nights with your Flashes family. Thank you for your time, your effort and your passion in keeping the spirit of the game alive. Your contributions have made a lasting impact both on and off the field.”

Rabalais was also honored.

“For the past 23 football seasons, Conrad has served as the voice of the St. Aloysius Flashes.  Growing up attending football games while his father broadcasted games to the local radio stations, Conrad was destined to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Your energy, professionalism, and passion have brought the game to life for players, fans, and the entire community. Thank you for being the voice that makes every moment on the field unforgettable.”

St. Al officials said Rabalais was also instrumental in renovating St. Al’s football field and stadium.

“In the summer of 2000, Conrad oversaw extensive renovations to the St. Al football field, managing the installation of new lights, bleachers, a press box, scoreboard, and updating the concession stand and restrooms. His contributions have left a lasting legacy on the school’s infrastructure and facilities.”

Griffith and Rabalais were also presented with plaques during the ceremony.

”Thank you both for all you have done for the Flashes family,” St. Al officials said. “Your service does not go unnoticed.”
