Officials weigh in on where to vote, expected turnout for Nov. 5 election

Published 3:41 pm Tuesday, October 29, 2024

As the Tuesday, Nov. 5 general election nears, residents throughout Warren County are readying to head to the polls.

County precincts will be used for Tuesday’s presidential election, which can be seen on this map. Local election officials encouraged voters who have access to the internet to use the Mississippi Secretary of State’s website, yallvote.ms, to make certain they are registered to vote as well as to find their voting place. On that website, voters can click on “My Election Day” and enter his or her address to find the correct polling place, a sample ballot and current office holders. The website can also be used to track absentee ballots.

In addition, Warren County Circuit Clerk Jan Daigre said anyone with questions regarding their voting precinct, absentee voting or the election in general, can reach her office from now through election day by calling 601-636-3961.

VOTER TURN OUT PREDICTIONS:

Warren County Election Commission Chairman Sara Dionne said Warren County has 29,025 registered voters.

Looking back to the last presidential election in 2020, Warren County had 27,404 registered voters and saw about 60 percent voter turn out. Dionne said she expects about the same turn out for Tuesday’s election.

Daigre said absentee ballot voting so far has been lower than it was in 2020. As of Monday afternoon, the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s office had requests for 2,020 ballots.

“We’re halfway to the 2020 number,” Daigre said on Monday. “It hasn’t been as busy with the exception of Friday, Saturday and today. We’re going to be busy (through the rest of the absentee voting period). We’ve had a lot of phone calls today wanting ballots mailed to kids in college.

“I think we will end up pretty similar to 2020, but right this second we are a little behind.”

The Circuit Clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Nov. 2, for in-person absentee voting or to hand out absentee ballots to be returned later. Warren County voters can come into the courthouse at 1009 Cherry St. and go to the Circuit Clerk’s office to cast their ballot on those dates.

The in-person absentee voting deadline is Saturday, Nov. 2. All mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 5. Daigre said absentee ballots returned to the local Vicksburg Post Office at 3415 Pemberton Square Blvd. will be put directly in the circuit clerk’s post office box.

Dionne also cautioned voters not to be taken by a social media scam.

“There is a scam on Facebook, telling folks that if someone initials the back of the ballot, it will not be counted,” she said. “In Mississippi we have a state law that requires the Poll Manager to initial the back of the ballot, so it can be verified as a legal ballot.”
