Jonah Artman kicked some tail in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.
Warren Central’s junior kicker received 663 of the 1,921 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to claim this week’s award in a narrow three-way race. Only 129 votes separated first from third place.
Vicksburg High cross country runner Casey Brown finished second, with 596 votes, and Porter’s Chapel Academy football player Henry Slayton was third with 534. St. Aloysius football player Carson Smith rounded out the field with 244 votes.
Artman kicked two field goals in a 19-7 win over Neshoba Central on Oct. 25 that clinched Warren Central’s berth in the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs.
Artman also broke a nearly 40-year-old Warren County record for most career field goals. He now has 24 in three varsity seasons, breaking the record of 23 that Warren Central’s Sam Thigpen set from 1983-85.
Artman is 7-for-8 on field goals this season. In his high school career he is 24-for-29, with a long of 46 yards.
He has also made 105 of 110 extra point attempts.
Warren Central (5-3, 3-0 MHSAA Region 2-6A) will play at home this Friday at 7 p.m. against Callaway (4-5, 2-1).
Congratulations to Jonah and the other nominees, and thank you to our readers for voting.
