Warren Central didn’t just get to celebrate a region championship. It got to enjoy it, savor it and let everyone share in the moment.
Aden Greer rushed for two touchdowns, Larry Reynolds returned a fumble for a score, and the Vikings made big plays in all three phases of the game to crush Callaway 45-6 on Friday.
Warren Central (6-3, 4-0 MHSAA Region 2-6A) clinched its second consecutive region championship, the first time it has gone back-to-back since 2003-04. The Vikings have also won 14 straight region games since 2022.
“This is hard to do, so I’m proud of this moment. I want them to enjoy it and soak it up. That’s stuff that you don’t forget,” Warren Central coach Josh Morgan said.
Warren Central did not have a big offensive night — only 239 total yards — but ran up the score thanks to big defensive and special teams plays that provided short fields.
A fumbled punt snap set up an 11-yard touchdown run by Eric Collins Jr. for the first touchdown of the game, and in the second quarter a 40-yard punt return by Rickey Neal put the ball on the 1-yard line. Greer, who also scored on a 28-yard run, punched it in on the next play for a 21-0 lead.
Jonah Artman kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, and on the second play of the second half Reynolds scooped up a fumble a returned it five yards for another TD that made it 31-0.
“We felt like we had an edge on them with our special teams and we used it,” Morgan said. “Our guys did a really good job of executing and being locked in. I thought they helped us with some bad snaps, but we were ready for it and put a little pressure on them.”
With the game out of reach, Morgan let some of his little-used seniors and backups get a moment to shine on senior night. They played almost the entire second half, with six different players either getting a rushing attempt, catching a pass or throwing one.
Senior Jadarius Miller caught three passes for 43 yards on a scoring drive that was capped by quarterback Nash Morgan’s 5-yard TD run.
The big winner of the group was junior fullback Fred Mixon, who scored on an 11-yard run on the game’s final play.
“It’s a blessing, because they deserve it. They work for it. I wish we could get them in there a lot more,” Josh Morgan said. “A lot of it is older guys, some are guys that we’re developing, but a lot goes into a year and they did a good job, too.”
