Vicksburg’s Knight adds to list of county football records set in 2024

Another week of the 2024 high school football season is in the books, and another notable Warren County record has fallen.

Vicksburg High running back Decorey Knight Jr. rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown in a 41-27 loss to Columbus on Friday to break a 45-year-old school record for career rushing yards.

Knight now has 2,960 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in three varsity seasons at VHS. Sylvester Stamps, who went on to play six seasons in the NFL, held the record of 2,946 yards set between 1977 and 1979.

Knight, who played his freshman season at Warren Central before transferring to Vicksburg, also reached another milestone by becoming the 13th Warren County player to reach the 3,000-yard mark overall. Including his freshman season, Knight has 3,028 yards and 29 touchdowns. His totals at WC do not count toward the Vicksburg High career total.

Warren County yardage records date to 1970 because totals before that season are incomplete.

Vicksburg (0-9) has one game left in its season, on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Ridgeland.

Knight is the fourth player this season to break a major school or county record:

• Porter’s Chapel Academy’s Jase Jung broke the 30-year-old records for rushing yards and touchdowns — both in a season and career — that Warren Central’s Brian Darden set in 1994.

After rushing for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-22 victory over Park Place in the MAIS Class 2A playoffs, Jung has 6,259 yards and 86 touchdowns in his career; and 3,549 yards and 47 touchdowns this season.

Jung also blew past PCA’s school record of 2,037 career yards that Earl Johnson set in the mid-1970s, and has set single-game county records for yards (532) and touchdowns (7) during his record-setting season.

PCA (8-4) will play DeSoto School in the second round of the playoffs on Nov. 8.

• Warren Central kicker Jonah Artman has surpassed the Warren County record of 23 career field goals set by the Vikings’ Sam Thigpen between 1983 and ‘85.

Artman booted a 43-yarder in a 45-6 victory over Callaway on Friday that was the 25th of his career.

• Warren Central’s Larry Reynolds Jr. has set the school records for sacks in a season (11) and career (19).

• Warren Central receiver Maddox Lynch set a school record for career receptions and is closing in on the mark for yardage.

Lynch has 96 receptions over the past three seasons, besting the 88 that Trey Hall had from 2020-22. The Warren County record of 123 was set by Vicksburg High’s Tedarious Brown between 2013-15, and is likely out of reach, but Lynch could become only the fifth player since 1970 to catch 100 passes.

Lynch needs 90 yards to top Demond Patton’s school record of 1,327 set from 2017-19.

Warren Central (6-3) will finish its regular season on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Columbus, and then will have at least one playoff game after that.
