Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) officials on Tuesday said a string of recently reported auto thefts are being investigated and VPD is offering tips on how to avoid becoming a victim.

We’re aware of concerns about recent auto thefts in our community, and we want to update you on what we’re seeing and provide helpful tips to keep your vehicles safe,” VPD said in a statement. “In the past month, Vicksburg has had a total of seven auto thefts. In two cases, keys were left inside the vehicles, and in two others, there were issues with door locks.”

VPD said taking small, common-sense steps to avoid making a vehicle a target greatly reduces a person’s chance of becoming a victim of auto theft or burglary.

“We urge everyone to double-check that your doors are locked and never leave keys in the vehicle. Unfortunately, in cases where keys are left inside, insurance may not cover the loss.”

VPD also said evidence in the cases suggests the culprits may not be from Vicksburg.

“Two vehicles were recovered here in town, and another was found in Jackson, leading us to believe the suspects may be from outside the area,” VPD said. “We’ve learned that suspects may be using a device to drill a small hole under the door lock to gain entry. We advise keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior around vehicles and reporting it immediately.”

As the holiday season approaches, VPD said it’s even more important to stay vigilant.

“Criminals often look for quick opportunities, but by working together, we can make Vicksburg a safer place.”

Tips to protect vehicles include:

  1. Always Lock Doors & Take Keys: Never leave keys or valuables in the car, even for a short time.
  2. Consider Security Enhancements: Car alarms, steering wheel locks, and dash cams can add extra protection.
  3. Park Smart: Whenever possible, park in well-lit areas or close to security cameras.
  4. Use Home Security Systems: Outdoor cameras or motion-activated lights on your property can deter theft.
  5. Be Cautious When Purchasing: Look for safety features like automatic locks and tracking systems that could help if a theft occurs.

“Together, we can make a difference in keeping our community safe,” Chief of Police Penny Jones said. “Thank you for your attention and cooperation. Let’s look out for one another this holiday season.”
