When Trinity McGloster started to consider her college options, one school jumped to the top of her list.
Getting to play a sport that she loves for them is an added bonus.
McGloster, a Vicksburg High senior, announced Wednesday that she has signed to play softball at Jackson State University. She’ll continue a family tradition — several relatives have attended school there — in addition to playing Division I softball and pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering.
“Jackson State, regardless of if it was going for sports, that was my No. 1 school because academics is what I was going for first,” McGloster said. “Of course when he gave me the offer, I knew this was in stone. This is where I wanted to go.”
McGloster has played several different positions over the course of five varsity seasons for Vicksburg High. She batted .375 last season, with nine doubles, 14 RBIs and 15 runs scored and was selected to The Vicksburg Post’s All-County team. Jackson State recruited her as a middle infielder and utility player.
Softball is not her only sport, however. She is also an outstanding soccer player and was The Post’s Warren County Player of the Year in 2022.
McGloster said she also was recruited by the soccer coaches from Jackson State and Alcorn State, but decided she likes softball more.
“At first it was (hard to decide), but then I knew my love was deeper for softball more than soccer so that made up my mind,” McGloster said. “Softball, to me, gets me out of my head space. It’s one of those things I do and it gets me out of reality. It relaxes me. It calms me. Softball is what I wanted to do.”
Getting to do it at the Division I college level is something else she’s wanted to do for a long time. McGloster broke into the varsity lineups for both of her sports as a seventh-grader and has been one of the top athletes in Warren County ever since.
Knowing her athletic career will continue at the next level was a good feeling, she said.
“It’s very awesome. This has been a dream of mine since I started playing softball. I knew going into seventh grade and starting varsity this is what I want to do in college,” McGloster said. “I’ve put in the hard work and a lot of dedication for this and I finally got that dream.”
McGloster thanked God, her family and her coaches for their love and support over the years. Although she said the family members who have attended JSU — some of whom attended Wednesday’s signing day ceremony at VHS — did not pressure her to go there, they didn’t mind the decision either.
“They are happy. They are really happy,” she said with a laugh.
