Vicksburg High’s football team did not have its best season, but some of its players are being recognized among Mississippi’s best.

On Monday, running back DeCorey Knight Jr. was added to the North roster for the Bernard Blackwell Mississippi All-Star Game that will be played Dec. 21 at Gulfport.

Linemen Mickell Jones and Willie Edmond, meanwhile, will play in the Magnolia Senior Bowl all-star game on Dec. 29 at East Central Community College in Decatur.

VHS head coach Christopher Lacey will serve as an assistant coach in the Magnolia Senior Bowl. Another Gator, linebacker Wallys Curry, will play in the event’s sophomore all-star game.

Vicksburg finished with an 0-10 record, but Knight — with Jones and Edmond plowing the road ahead — rushed for 1,169 yards and six touchdowns.

Knight broke a 45-year-old school record for career rushing yards set by Sylvester Stamps in 1979. Knight finished his high school career with 3,066 yards and 30 touchdowns, which includes his freshman season at Warren Central. He had 2,998 yards at VHS.

Knight also caught 52 passes for 1,020 yards and 10 TDs. He is the first player ever in Warren County to have 3,000 career rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards.

“Knowing the season that we had didn’t go the way that it was supposed to go, but hard work is still hard work and you’ll get rewards for working hard,” Lacey said. “(Knight) has done that. It’s just another opportunity for him to showcase his talents on that level. Same thing with Mike and Willie. I’m excited for all of them.”
