Basketball roundup: Vicksburg, St. Al sweep opponents

After some early missteps, the Vicksburg Gators are starting to find their footing.

JaQuez Jones scored 13 points, and nine players had at least one as Vicksburg’s boys basketball team beat Florence 61-50 on Tuesday.

It was the second win in a row for the Gators (3-3) after they lost the previous three games.

Jones was the only Gator in double figures, but they used a balanced effort to get the win. Javeion Perkins finished with nine points, Kris Washington and Marlyn Foy had eight each, and Mincer Minor and Brycen Jones both scored seven. Jadarius Henderson added six.

Vicksburg built a 37-18 lead at halftime and kept Florence (1-1) at bay in the second half.

The Gators will be back in action Friday night, at home against Natchez. The girls-boys varsity doubleheader tips off at 6 p.m.

St. Aloysius 66, MSD 27
Anthony McCloud and Carson Gleese scored 20 points apiece to lead St. Aloysius (4-2) past the Mississippi School for the Deaf.

McCloud added 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double, and Gleese just missed one by grabbing eight rebounds.

Carter Henderson had eight points and seven rebounds, Tre Lee had six points and four assists, and John Hossley scored five points.

Carson Henderson and Sadler Lambiotte did not score, but contributed in other ways. Henderson finished with four rebounds and five assists, while Lambiotte had four rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

St. Al’s junior varsity team also beat MSD, 31-12. Dru Gleese and Reeves Sadler led the way with eight and six points, respectively. Patrick Southerland had five points and 10 rebounds, and Brantley Yelverton scored four points.

St. Al will play again Thursday, at home against River Oaks, with the junior high games starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 6.
Before the varsity girls game, at approximately 5:45 p.m., St. Al will honor former player Korey Sims. The 2024 St. Al graduate was killed in a shooting in August.

Vicksburg 51, Florence 48
Zion Harvey scored a game-high 24 points and Cynia Johnson added 15 to help the Vicksburg Missy Gators (5-1) grind out a win over Florence.

St. Aloysius 57, MSD 11
Megan Theriot had a big game with 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes past the Mississippi School for the Deaf.

Anslee Averett had a solid all-around game as well, with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Taryn Lusby added 11 points and four steals, and Elle Larson had three points and nine rebounds.

Farrell Roberson and Mallory Hobson both reached double figures in rebounds, with 12 and 10, respectively.
