The Salvation Army is extending a community-wide invitation to join in its annual holiday celebration, kicking off its largest fundraiser, the Christmas Red Kettle Campaign.

The Salvation Army will launch this season’s Christmas campaign with the inaugural ringing of its iconic red bell, heralding the spirit of hope and generosity that defines its mission and commitment to “Do The Most Good,” organizers said. The community is invited to the kickoff celebration Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Vicksburg Mall at Pemberton Square.

“We are excited to ring in the holiday season with this event,” said Maj. Janna Torgerson of The Salvation Army. “We want to remind everyone that The Salvation Army provides many services and programs to those in need right here in the (central Mississippi) area. When you give to a Red Kettle, you are helping your neighbors because those donations stay local.”

Last year, the organization provided various programs and services to more than 800 families in crisis. The Salvation Army predicts there will be a significant increase in requests for assistance as families continue to face high food, utility, and housing costs.

“Many families are still in need,” Torgerson said. “We’ve set this year’s fundraising goal at $50,000 to meet the increased needs this holiday season and beyond.”

Torgerson said the kickoff event will also highlight how The Salvation Army is embracing modern technology to offer more convenient giving options for potential donors. All Red Kettles now feature QR codes, allowing shoppers to make quick and secure donations using their phones. The Kettles can accept other forms of payment, including credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Venmo.

“For those who prefer the ease of online giving, please visit vicksburgkettle.org,” Torgerson said. “There is also an option for supporters to host online Red Kettle fundraisers by choosing the ‘Fundraising’ option, or even host a Red Kettle at their place of business.”

One of the primary programs the Red Kettle initiative funds is the Angel Tree program, which provides gifts and clothing to children, seniors, and families who would otherwise go without. Last year, The Salvation Army provided toys and essentials for more than 800 children in need.

“Red Kettle donations can help ensure every child gets to experience the joy and miracle of Christmas,” Torgerson said. “We hope everyone will come out to help us get the holiday season started.”
