For the second time this season, Brandon Gilliam has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Alabama State kicker and former Warren Central star earned this week’s honor after kicking three field goals — which accounted for all of his team’s points — in a 9-6 victory over Prairie View A&M on Nov. 23.
Gilliam was 3-for-4 on his field goal attempts, with makes from 42, 32 and 30 yards. The 30-yarder came with 6:43 left in the game and put the Hornets ahead for good.
Gilliam added this week’s SWAC honor to the one he got for the week of Sept. 29, when he made four field goals and two PATs in a 26-21 win against Bethune-Cookman.
So far this season Gilliam has connected on 17 of 25 field goal attempts. It is the most field goals made in a season by an Alabama State kicker since 2014. Gilliam is also 19-for-20 on PAT attempts.
Alabama State (6-5) will finish its season on Thanksgiving Day against Tuskegee in the 100th Turkey Day Classic rivalry game. The game will be televised on ESPNU at 1 p.m.
