Briarfield’s Ryder Jones is the Athlete of the Week

Ryder Jones made it look easy in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

The Briarfield Academy football player received 1,640 of the 2,325 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to claim this week’s award.

Warren Central soccer player Luke Bond finished second with 268 votes. Vicksburg High soccer player Midori Allen was third, with 222 votes, and St. Aloysius basketball player Annslee Averett was fourth with 200.

Jones, a senior running back and linebacker, had 125 total yards and 10 tackles in a 32-18 victory over Wilkinson County Christian Academy in the MAIS Class 1A championship game on Nov. 22.

Jones caught two passes for 69 yards, and rushed seven times for 56 yards to help the Rebels win their fourth MAIS eight-man football championship in eight seasons.

Jones finished the season with 768 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, and 15 receptions for 325 yards and five TDs. He also led the team with 101 total tackles, 26 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Jones has also been selected to play in the MAIS Class 1A/2A All-Star Game on Dec. 5 at 4 p.m., at Madison-Ridgeland Academy.
