The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) is warning the public about telephone scam currently making the rounds.
In post to the VPD Facebook page, Chief of Police Penny Jones called on citizens to be wary of specific phone calls.
“The Vicksburg Police Department would like to warn the public about a telephone scam targeting our community,” Jones wrote. “Scammers are calling individuals, falsely claiming that a loved one is in jail and demanding money through Cash App, Green Dot cards, or other payment methods.”
Jones said the public should be aware of the following important information: VPD will never call and ask for money to be sent through any electronic payment method; if a resident receives such a call, do not provide personal or financial information, but hang up immediately and report the incident to the VPD non-emergency line at 601-636-2511.
Jones also included a special note for families: “Elderly individuals are often targeted by these scams. Please inform your loved ones to be cautious and to verify any claims before taking action. Stay vigilant, and let’s work together to stop these scammers in their tracks!”
