South Alabama edges Alcorn State in overtime

MOBILE, Ala. — Alcorn State gave South Alabama all it could handle, but ran out of gas and lost 74-65 to the Jaguars in overtime in a men’s basketball game on Friday.

Corey Myles led South Alabama (5-3) with 25 points and Barry Dunning Jr. scored 14. Each player scored four points in overtime.

Keionte Cornelis made eight 3-pointers and led Alcorn State (0-6) with 24 points. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt scored 15, and Omari Hamilton had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Former Vicksburg High star Davian Williams had three points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for the Braves.

Alcorn led 55-47 after a a pair of free throws by Gaines-Wyatt with 5:37 left in regulation. South Alabama came back to tie it at 61 on Elijah Ormiston’s layup with 33 seconds to go.

Alcorn had a chance to win it, but Gaines-Wyatt missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Ormiston then started the overtime period with a layup and South Alabama did not trail again.

Alcorn was 0-for-9 from the field overall, and 0-for-6 from 3-point range in overtime. All of its points came on free throws. South Alabama was 7-for-8 at the foul line in overtime.

Alcorn lost its sixth game in a row against a daunting early-season schedule of road games. It will play at Maryland (Dec. 1), Wichita State (Dec. 4) and Oklahoma (Dec. 7) next week, and does not play a home game until its SWAC opener vs. Jackson State on Jan. 4.
