The Vicksburg Chamber Choir will present “Night of Wonder,” a Christmas concert, at Church of the Holy Trinity Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m.

Christie Beasley, director of the choir, said there will be a mixture of sacred and secular music.

“It’s Christmas music. Night of Wonder. (That) is our theme this year. All of our songs are based on what happened that night . . . in Bethlehem and the angel Gabriel coming to bring the message. It tells the story in song.”

Choir member Lynn Foley said those in attendance are in for a treat.

“It’s all done with song,” she said. “Christie’s great at doing that for each of our concerts. They all have a flow, and this is the Christmas one.”

“It’s not necessarily chronological,” Beasley said. “But it is thematic.”

Some secular music is also included.

“Even the secular songs are more on the moving-and-meaningful, sacred side. It’s a very ethereal and moving concert to set the tone for what Christmas is all about. It’s not commercialized. We are singing ‘Silver Bells,’ that’s probably the most secular song this year.”

There will also be some instrumental pieces featuring Austin Crabtree and Jennifer Tillotson. Mary Kate Core will sing a feature solo, a piece from the “Messiah.”

“We perform about four times a year,” Beasley said. “We have a spring concert and a Christmas concert . . . a patriotic concert and this year we performed with the Vicksburg Orchestral Society.”

Beasley tried to pinpoint the number of years she has been directing. Choir members chimed in with a discussion recalling different concerts and their appreciation for their director. The decision seemed to point to a concert in 2021. The choir didn’t sing at all during the year 2020 due to Covid.

The choir also looks forward to competing in this year’s V105.5 Caroling Contest.

“Last year was our first year, and we won our category,” Foley said.

The choir, a non-auditioning group, welcomes adults interested in joining.

“The best way is to reach out through Facebook,” Beasley said. “Every season we post a registration form and people can register and show up and try it out. If they like it, they can stay. We welcome everybody.”

Even those who have never participated in a choir before are welcomed, she said.

“If you have a love of singing, love of music, we want you,” Beasley said.

“Our choir seems to be growing in number,” Foley said. “Therefore, our audience grows. We’ve had packed facilities the last several concerts, which has been great.”

The concert is free to attend, but donations are welcomed.

“We are self-sustaining,” Beasley said. “But the community has been very generous to us.”
