FLOWOOD — The Conerly Trophy is headed back to Oxford.
Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart was named the winner of the C Spire Conerly Trophy, given to the top college football player in Mississippi, at a ceremony Tuesday in Flowood.
It’s the fourth time in five years that an Ole Miss player has won the award. Delta State quarterback Patrick Shegog interrupted the run last year.
Dart is the 12th Ole Miss player to win the Conerly Trophy, which was first handed out in 1996. The Utah native is in his third season as the Rebels’ starting quarterback and has led them to a 9-3 record and No. 13 spot in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.
Dart has passed for 10,213 yards — an Ole Miss record — and 68 touchdowns in his college career. He owns other Ole Miss school records for total offense (11,668 yards), 300-yard passing games (14) and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,455).
This season, Dart has thrown for 3,875 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He’s also rushed for 452 yards and three touchdowns, and ranks No. 1 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total offense with 360.6 yards per game.
Dart also set Ole Miss’ single-game records for passing yards (515) and total offense (562), and tied the mark for passing touchdowns (6) in a 63-31 rout of Arkansas on Nov. 2.
The Conerly Trophy is the first of several postseason awards Dart hopes to haul in. He is a finalist for both the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy — the “Academic Heisman” — and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
