PCA’s Johnston, Jung shine at MAIS football all-star game

A couple of Porter’s Chapel Academy football players put the “star” in “all-star” on Thursday.

Jase Jung caught two touchdown passes to lead the Blue team to a 46-14 victory, and Conley Johnston was named the Defensive MVP for the White in the MAIS Class 1A/2A All-Star Game at Madison-Ridgeland Academy.

Jung, who set the Warren County single-season and career records for rushing yards and touchdowns this season, mostly played receiver for the Blue team as it went with a pass-heavy offense. He caught a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and a 13-yard TD in the fourth.

Jung also carried the ball three times for 10 yards, and scored on a two-point conversion run.

For the White team, Johnston had an outstanding game in a losing effort. Playing defensive tackle, he finished with 14 total tackles — eight solos and six assists — to go along with two sacks and two tackles for loss.

Johnston also recovered an onside kick and earned the honor as the top defensive player for his team.

Two other Porter’s Chapel players were also on the White roster.

Hunter Simms played tight end and linebacker and had three tackles. He was targeted on four passes, but they all fell incomplete. Henry Slayton had one tackle while playing defensive end and linebacker.

Briarfield Academy’s Ryder Jones was named the Blue team’s Defensive MVP. He had two tackles and an interception, as well as one rushing attempt for two yards.

The Class 1A/2A All-Star Game was the first to exclusively feature the MAIS’ two eight-man football classifications, and was played under eight-man rules. It also started a two-day all-star celebration to bring down the curtain on the association’s 2024 football season.

The Class 3A/4A and 5A/6A games will be played Friday at Jackson Prep, at 3:30 and 7 p.m., respectively. They will be streamed live on the MAIS Network.

St. Aloysius lineman Clark Hobson, running back/linebacker Thompson Fortenberry, and kicker John Ellis Montgomery will all play in the Class 3A/4A game.
