Winners revealed: 19th Annual V105.5 Christmas Caroling Contest another big hit (with photo gallery)

The 19th Annual V105.5 Christmas Caroling Contest was held at the Vicksburg Convention Center Thursday night, with radio station employees Mark Jones and Liz Curtis serving as emcees.
A total of 23 groups and soloists competed for cash prizes and recognition. Categories included: Division 1: Teen Soloist; Division 2: Upper Elementary; Division 3: Adult Soloist; Division 4, Lower Elementary; Division 5: Young Soloist; Division 6: High School; and Division 7: Junior High.
Bo Campbell was named the winner of Division 1: Teen Soloist, for his rendition of “White Christmas,” and received a cash prize of $400. Runners-up were Zoe Belle Pittman, who sang “A Snowman and Me,” Cameron Hill, who performed “Christmas Time is Here,” and Belle Spires who also played the guitar with her vocal performance of “Christmas Medley.” Each runner-up received a cash prize of $100.
In Division 2: Upper Elementary, the field was narrowed to the top five due to the large number of contestants. Winning first place was Bovina Elementary Honor Choir with its performance of “The Chimney Song.” The choir was awarded $1,000. Runners-up in the Upper Elementary category were Porter’s Chapel Honor Choir for “Go Where I Send Thee,” Vicksburg Intermediate School Honor Choir for “Somewhere in My Memory,” South Park with a Tune (SWAT) for “In December,” and Warrenton Elementary Honor Choir for “Christmas Lights.” Runners-up each received a $400 cash prize.
Division 3: Adult Soloist, featured three competitors. Leon Moore Jr. was awarded first place for his performance of “What Christmas Means to Me.” He was awarded a cash prize of $400. Runners-up were Dough Spires, who sang “Mary, Did You Know?” and Aleisha Phillips, who sang “O Holy Night.” Each runner-up received a cash prize of $100.
In Division 4: Lower Elementary, Bovina Elementary First and Second Grade Choir took first place with its performance of “Nice, Nice, Christmas.” The choir received a cash prize of $1,000. Runners-up in the category included The Singing Puppies of South Park (first grade) for “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas,” and The South Park Singing Bulldogs (third grade), for “Boogie Woogie Holiday.” Each runner-up was awarded $400.
Division 5 featured the Young Soloists. Sawyer Ross took first place with his performance of “Run, Run Rudolph.” He played the guitar as he sang and won a cash prize of $400. Runners-up were Elvie Grace Bradley, who sang “Silent Night,” Harley Lynn Bagshaw, who performed “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and Rylee Kate Strebeck, who sang “Silent Night.” Each runner-up received a cash award of $100.
Division 6 featured High School. The Warren Central Madrigal Singers took first place with a performance of “Joy to the World,” and received a cash prize of $1,000. Warren Central Chamber Singers were named runner-up and received a prize of $400 for performing “Away.”
Division 7: Junior High, had two entries. Academy of Innovation seventh/eighth Mixed Choir won first place with its performance of “Have You Seen the Wind?” The choir received $1,000. Academy of Innovation seventh/eighth Treble Choir performed “Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind,” and were awarded $400 as the runner-up.
Judges for this year’s contest were Jackson-area residents and included Bradley Davis, Ruth Pooley and Carl Haynes. Rebecca Antwine served as the accountant responsible for tabulating results.
Desi Goodson, choral director at Bovina Elementary School, expressed her excitement that the school won both divisions in the elementary category.
“I’ve been wanting to teach (the) class guitar. I’d like to buy ukuleles or small guitars for a classroom setting,” Goodson said. “This money will definitely help.”
