Betty Eichelberger Whitaker

Betty Eichelberger Whitaker entered into eternal rest Friday, Dec. 6, at age 75, at home from cancer.

She was born Jan. 8, 1949 to Bob and Robbie Faye Everett Eichelberger in Morton, Mississippi. Betty graduated from Morton High School in 1967. She attended East Central Community College and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. She then earned a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and Education Specialist from Mississippi College.

She taught for 40 years in the Vicksburg Warren School District, primarily at Cedars and Redwood elementary schools, as well as Warren Central Junior High School. In addition, she taught part time at Hinds Community College and Mississippi College.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Bobbie Eichelberger Carlisle. She is survived by her husband, Clarence A. Whitaker; son, Wesley Whitaker and his children; her brothers, John Eichelberger (Lisa) of Lake Caroline, Mississippi, and Paul Eichelberger (Renee) of Tampa; several nieces and nephews, Allen E. Carlisle (Anna) of Madison, Mississippi and Magen Williams (Brad) of Vicksburg, and Nate and Emily Turbville, who were like her grandchildren.

The family will hold a visitation Jan. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Riles Fisher Funeral Home on Indiana Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Morton Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.
