The NRoute Transit Commission held a holiday outreach initiative Wednesday in which seniors were taken to lunch with Christmas caroling and on a shopping trip.
One of the organizers of the event was Machelle Kyles, mobility manager for NRoute.
“It went amazing. We had 20 seniors sign up,” Kyles said.
Lunch was served at Amazing Grace Restaurant, where Christmas carols were sung by youngsters from All My Children Daycare.
“The seniors really enjoyed it. The caroling was just the highlight. They had a dramatization with their caroling of the songs that gave the seniors and all of us a lot of smiles,” Kyles said.
Participants were given gift bags with several items in them. The owner of the daycare, Tabitha Collins, surprised seniors with throws and toys that they could give to the carolers.
NRoute Operations Manager Audrey Jackson donated toiletries and Avon products to be included in the seniors’ gift bags. A small monetary gift and a Christmas card wishing them peace and joy were also included.
After lunch, the seniors were taken to Rose’s Express for the opportunity to do some holiday shopping.
Kyles said that NRoute is planning to hold similar outreach events every few months, with the next expected to happen in February. She said it will feature a cultural component focused on Black History Month.
