Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps on Monday said the investigation into the deadly fire that claimed a life in early December on Mattingly Street has been officially deemed an accident.

“On Monday, December 9, 2024, a devastating structure fire broke out at 718 Mattingly Street, engulfing the home in flames and smoke,” Stamps said. “The Vicksburg Fire Department rushed to the scene, aware that there were individuals trapped inside. Despite their swift response, the fire tragically claimed the life of 31-year-old Shiquira Maniel, leaving an indescribable void in the hearts of her loved ones.”

Stamps said the fire was subsequently investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, as well as a private investigatory agency, both of which concluded the incident was accidental.

“In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Fire Investigator Nathaniel Williams from the Vicksburg Fire Department collaborated closely with Kevin Butler and Orlan Smith of the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with Kevin Wilson of Crain & Associates Technical Investigation Services, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire,” he said. “Their thorough and detailed examination concluded that the fire was accidental, originating in the kitchen due to unattended cooking.”

Stamps said, while one person in the home was able to escape without injury, Maniel was found deceased in the home’s bathroom.

“Shiquira was in the bathroom at that time, unaware of the imminent danger occurring just a few feet away. This devastating incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life. It underscores the importance of practicing fire exit drills within our homes to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones.”
