New year, new shelter: Animals’ move to new facility delayed until January

After years of waiting on a new facility for the Vicksburg Animal Shelter, city officials said the animals themselves will have to wait a few more days before moving into the new building on Cedars Road.

The ribbon was cut on the new facility Dec. 12, with plans to move the animals in the following Monday, Dec. 16; however, Animal Control Supervisor Kacie Lindsey said delays with some of the new cages have pushed that date back until January.

“The reason why we haven’t moved them in is because the company that we ordered the cat cages through didn’t send us all of the parts to put the cages together,” Linsdey explained. “Four of the doors aren’t the same as the other doors and we had to put them on temporarily until we get the other doors.”

Lindsey said the piecemeal cages will do the trick until the correct parts arrive, adding cats are especially susceptible to the stresses of moving, so it was a better idea to hold off until January.

“We’re still planning on moving into the new building starting probably Jan. 6,” she said. “We will be closed completely that day to move, unless it is an emergency. It’s a lot to do. Cats are the biggest problem. They stress a lot more than dogs do, so we’re going to do it this way to try to ease the stress on them and us.”

In the meantime, Lindsey said anyone looking to adopt an animal may still reach out to the shelter by calling 601-636-6982 or by coming by the soon-to-be former location at 100 Old Mill Road.
