Ashley Jackson is an exploring careers teacher at the Vicksburg Warren School District’s Academy of Innovation (AOI), where she was named Teacher of the Year in November.

Jackson is a finalist for the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year award. One elementary and one secondary teacher of the year will be announced at the Chamber Luncheon in February. The winner of each award will receive $1,000 from Ameristar Casino and the runner-ups for each award will receive $500 from Mutual Credit Union.

Jackson holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Delta State University and said her responsibility to her students is her driving force.

“A lesson that truly defines me as an educator is one that extends far beyond the standards and curriculum we teach in the classroom,” Jackson said. “It lies in our responsibility to guide and encourage students to become not only knowledgeable individuals, but also compassionate, empathetic human beings who treat others with kindness and respect, reflecting the love that Christ has shown them. It is essential that we help students understand the importance of mutual respect, where they are taught to honor those around them, while also recognizing that they too deserve respect from their teachers and peers alike.”

Jackson said she also uses in-classroom strategies to prepare her students for life beyond AOI.

“In my class, we focus on engaging students with the practical skills they’ll need to succeed in their careers and adult lives,” she said. “We cover a variety of important topics, including soft skills, interview techniques, and career exploration, helping students find the paths that best fit their strengths and interests. A big part of our time together is spent discussing how to manage time effectively, write professional emails and meet deadlines – skills that will serve them well in any career.”

Jackson said fostering a safe and inviting environment in her classroom is key to helping her students get the most out of each day.

“In my classroom, I strive to create a welcoming and safe space where students feel valued and supported,” she said. “From the moment they walk in, I focus on building a positive and inclusive atmosphere, greeting each student warmly and fostering a sense of respect and belonging. This helps students feel comfortable and confident enough to engage fully in the learning process.”

At the end of the day, Jackson said helping each student unlock his or her potential is what it is all about.

“I teach because I want to be a caring and supportive presence in my students’ lives, offering kindness and grace as they navigate their own paths,” she said. “It’s about helping them feel seen, valued and capable of more than they might realize.”
