As 2025 approaches and residents of Vicksburg prepare to celebrate the arrival of a new year, Chief of Police Penny Jones has taken to social media to remind locals and visitors to be safe while enjoying the festivities.
“As we celebrate the arrival of 2025, I want to wish all Vicksburg citizens a joyous, but most importantly, a safe holiday,” Jones said Tuesday. “May the new year bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to you and your family.
“More importantly, I’d like to remind everyone that discharging firearms and shooting fireworks within the city limits are both illegal under Vicksburg’s City Ordinance.”
Jones said City Ordinance 17-160 prohibits the discharge of any firearm within city limits. It’s a misdemeanor offense with penalties up to a $1,000 fine and/or 90 days in jail.
“Likewise, shooting fireworks within city limits is prohibited, so let’s all enjoy the holiday responsibly and avoid any unnecessary safety hazards,” she said. “Let’s work together to ensure a safe and peaceful New Year for everyone. Please celebrate responsibly, and let’s keep Vicksburg a great place to live for all. Stay safe, and Happy New Year!”
