Basketball Roundup: Vicksburg swept by Columbus, WC splits with Callaway

For the first time this basketball season, the Vicksburg Missy Gators are in a slump.

Columbus used a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to take the lead and never gave it back as it beat Vicksburg 59-56 on Friday.

It was the third loss in a row, and fourth in five games for the Missy Gators (10-7, 1-1 MHSAA Region 2-6A). One of those losses was by 13 points, but the other three have been by a total of nine points.

Zion Harvey led Vicksburg with 29 points, nine steals, six rebounds and three assists. She was 9-for-11 from the free throw line.

Cynia Johnson added 14 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. She finished with four fouls, and two other VHS starters fouled out.

Ny’Keria Watson also scored five points.

Vicksburg will play two Region 2-6A games next week, Tuesday at home vs. Neshoba Central and Jan. 10 at Ridgeland. Both girls-boys varsity doubleheaders begin at 6 p.m.

In Friday’s boys’ game, Columbus beat Vicksburg 69-58. Vicksburg (8-9, 0-2 Region 2-6A) lost its third game in a row.

Warren Central 71, Callaway 56
Jaylon Winters and Roosevelt Harris scored 19 points apiece, and Robert Williams added 18 to carry Warren Central (5-9, 2-0 Region 2-6A) past Callaway (7-11, 0-2) on Friday.

Harris scored six points and Williams had five in the fourth quarter as Warren Central outscored Callaway 21-9 to pull away.

Davon O’Neal added nine points for the Vikings. Micah Moore scored four. Braxton Wood led Callaway with 25 points, with 12 of those coming in the third quarter.

Warren Central beat Callaway for the first time since Decembr 2006, although the teams had only played five times since then.

In the girls’ game Friday, Callaway beat Warren Central 66-28.

Warren Central will have two tough games next week. It’ll host Ridgeland on Tuesday and travel to Columbus on Friday, Jan. 10. Ridgeland’s boys team is ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, and Columbus is No. 1.
