Lady Vikes whip Whippets in Saturday soccer matinee

Warren Central’s girls’ soccer team dodged a scare and then opened up on Kosciusko in the second half.

After Kosciusko hit the post on a penalty kick, the Lady Vikes scored three goals in the last 20 minutes to beat the Whippets 3-0 Saturday at Viking Stadium.

Melissa Herrle scored the first goal in the 60th minute, which was about five minutes after the missed penalty kick.

A Kosciusko player was red-carded and ejected for a hard foul moments later, leaving her team short-handed. Warren Central took advantage to score goals by Jordan Polk and Rachel Opperman to blow it open.

Polk also had an assist, and Mary Clell Allred had two for the Lady Vikes (14-3). Hayleigh Simmons made four saves.
Warren Central outshot Kosciusko 29-15 as it won its sixth game in a row.

“They had a good keeper and we just kept shooting right at her,” Warren Central coach Jeremy Lawrence said.

This was Warren Central’s first game since Dec. 20, and kicked off the final month of the regular season. It’ll host Neshoba Central (10-3-2) in a key MHSAA Region 2-6A game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Warren Central had a big advantage in shots and scoring chances against Kosciusko, but no one had the edge in goals.

Warren Central outshot Kosciusko 17-6, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal, but the teams played to a scoreless tie Saturday at Viking Stadium.

Keeper Jamarian Shelly made three saves for the Vikings to get the shutout. Kosciusko keeper Braden Ray had 10 saves.
