A campsite located near the intersection of Iowa Boulevard and Highway 61 South in front of the Vicksburg Walmart has been disassembled and moved by state officials this week, relocating at least one person who had been occupying the makeshift structure for weeks in the process.

Officials with the City of Vicksburg said the man occupying the campsite had been instructed he was on property owned by the State of Mississippi and controlled by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and was advised to vacate the premises by Sunday, Jan. 12, prior to state officials removing the campsite equipment Tuesday.

Vicksburg Ward 2 Alderman Alex Monsour said the city’s legal department had researched the situation prior to advising the man of his timeline to vacate. Chief of Police Penny Jones said the situation constituted a safety issue and confirmed Vicksburg Police Department officers assisted state officials in the removal of the campsite.
