The Vicksburg Missy Gators snapped a losing streak and earned a big region win in the best way possible — by beating a team that has inflicted no small amount of misery upon it for the better part of a decade.
Zion Harvey finished with 23 points, five assists and five steals as Vicksburg beat Neshoba Central 63-60 in overtime in a girls’ basketball game Tuesday.
Cynia Johnson also had a big double-double for the Missy Gators, with 18 points and 16 rebounds, as well as four steals and three blocked shots.
Vicksburg (11-7, 2-1 MHSAA Region 2-6A) had lost five in a row to Neshoba Central (9-9, 2-1), and this was only its second win in 11 meetings since 2016. Four of those losses were in the postseason. Neshoba Central has won three state championships during that span and is the defending Class 6A champion.
The Missy Gators had also lost three in a row and four out of five overall this season before breaking both slumps Tuesday. They trailed by 12 points at halftime and eight heading into the fourth quarter, then erased those deficits to force overtime.
Jordan Grace added nine points for the Missy Gators and Raylyn Parson scored five.
Shastyn Lewis led Neshoba Central with 15 points and Iyley Denson scored 13.
Vicksburg will be back in action Friday night, on the road at Ridgeland at 6 p.m. It hosts Warren Central on Jan. 14.
Ridgeland 49, Warren Central 35
Eva Young made three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, and Lilyana Greenfield scored 13 as Ridgeland (8-9, 2-1 Region 2-6A) held off a feisty Warren Central (2-11, 0-3) team on Tuesday.
Ridgeland jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and was ahead by 19 points at halftime, but its margin stayed between 10 and 15 points for most of the second half.
Camara Evans led Warren Central with 16 points, with 11 of those coming in the third quarter.
Arrionna Jenkins added eight points for the Lady Vikes, while Ballet Duty and Kylee Chambers scored four each.
Warren Central will play at Columbus on Friday, and then go across town to play Vicksburg High on Jan. 14.
Porter’s Chapel 40, Hillcrest Christian 21
Porter’s Chapel Academy outscored Hillcrest Christian 30-5 in the second half to surge to a girls’ basketball victory on Tuesday.
Sophie Masterson led PCA with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Marley Bufkin had 12 points and five steals. Audrey Carraway scored three points and Kendall Smith grabbed five rebounds.
Hillcrest only made one field goal in the second half, but still led 19-18 entering the fourth quarter. Masterson made a pair of 3-pointers and 13 of her 22 points in the final period to push Porter’s Chapel to the victory.
PCA will go to Monroe, Louisiana, to play River Oaks on Friday and then is back home for the rematch next Tuesday, Jan. 14.
