“It feels great,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming. Like (VFD Fire) Chief (Derrick) Stamps said, I’ve taken the test more than seven years, been top of the list. But this is one of those positions, when people get in there, they stay; they do a great job, they have a lot of experience, and we don’t expect them to leave. But I was fortunate enough that my cousin, he had 34 years and he retired.”

Carl Carson, who was in attendance at the ceremony, has been a pivotal figure in his cousin’s career, Daryl said. Not only did Carl encourage Daryl to join the fire department, but he also held him to a high standard.

“(Carl) said, ‘Daryl, I put you on a higher level, and I expect more of you than I do everybody else. Just because you’re my relative, I’m not gonna let you get away with nothing,’” Daryl said. “And I took that to heart, and I learned a lot from him, and I respect him, and I always will.”

The promotion ceremony was attended by several community leaders, including Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr., who commended Daryl for his dedication and perseverance.

“Leadership doesn’t come easy. You have to earn it. And I think you really have earned this leadership,” Flaggs said. “The thing that I like about you is that you’ve been patient, you’ve been tolerant, and you have earned.”

Stamps also spoke, highlighting Daryl’s commitment to the department and his readiness to take on the challenges of his new role.

“We take great pride in the dedication of our firefighters and experts about trade, which together enable us to uphold the essential standards,” Stamps said. “So we have gathered to recognize your unwavering commitment to service and to take on additional responsibilities. Your family, friends, and colleagues are undoubtedly proud of you, your hard work, and determination in achieving this significant milestone.”

Daryl began his career with the VFD January 10, 2000. This Friday will mark his 25th anniversary of service.
