Winter storm, travel concerns alter high school sports schedule for Warren County teams

It appears Warren County will dodge the worst of a winter storm that is approaching Mississippi, but the weather is altering the local high school sports schedule.
Vicksburg High, Warren Central, St. Aloysius and Porter’s Chapel Academy have all had games postponed that had been scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
The winter storm was forecast to drop up to two inches of rain on Vicksburg and along the I-20 corridor Thursday night and Friday. A bit farther north, however, colder temperatures will turn the precipitation to ice and snow and cause serious travel problems.
• Vicksburg High’s soccer teams and Warren Central’s basketball teams were both scheduled to play at Columbus on Friday night. Vicksburg will make the trip on Jan. 21 instead. The basketball games were postponed with no make-up date yet announced.
• Vicksburg High’s girls and boys basketball teams were to play at Ridgeland on Friday night. Those games were moved to Thursday at 6 p.m.
• Warren Central’s girls and boys soccer teams were scheduled to play Richland on Friday. Instead, they will play Saturday afternoon at WC’s Viking Stadium. The junior varsity boys will play at noon, followed by the varsity girls at 1 p.m. and the varsity boys at 3.
• Porter’s Chapel Academy’s girls and boys basketball games against River Oaks, scheduled for Friday in Monroe, Louisiana, were postponed. No make-up date for the MAIS District 4-3A game was announced. They are also scheduled to play Tuesday in Vicksburg.
• St. Aloysius’ boys’ soccer game vs. Brookhaven Academy, scheduled for Thursday, was canceled with no make-up date announced. Since it is not a district game, St. Al coach Jay Madison said the teams would try to play in February if the schedule permits, but was not certain that it would be rescheduled.
St. Al’s soccer team will also host a 16-team tournament Saturday at Key City Park in Vicksburg. The host Flashes will play Manchester Academy at 10 a.m. and Oak Forest Academy at 11:30.
Madison said the tournament will be played as scheduled — the weather is supposed to clear the state by Friday evening — but some teams from North Mississippi might drop out if they are unable to travel.
