The only thing Jacob Porter has racked up faster than goals is his vote total in the Vicksburg Post Athlete of the Week contest.

The Warren Central soccer player received 4,519 of the 5,716 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to become the first Athlete of the Week for 2025.

St. Aloysius soccer player John Ellis Montgomery received an impressive 1,039 votes that was only good for second place. Porter’s Chapel Academy basketball player Sophie Masterson was third, with 167 votes, and Vicksburg High basketball player Cynia Johnson finished fourth with 120.

Porter, a sophomore, scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Neshoba Central on Jan. 7. He added three more in a 5-0 win over Ridgeland on Tuesday and leads the Vikings with 20 goals and five assists this season.

Tuesday’s victory also clinched the Vikings’ second consecutive MHSAA Region 2-6A championship.

Congratulations to Jacob and the other nominees, and thank you to our readers for voting.

The nominees for the Athlete of the Week award are announced each Sunday, and voting is open until midnight Tuesday. Links to the poll will be posted on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X pages, as well as vicksburgpost.com.
