Gators pick up big basketball region win over Callaway

After dreading seeing Callaway on the schedule for years, the Vicksburg Gators are suddenly licking their chops to play them.

Javeion Perkins scored 12 points and Ja’Quez Jones had 11 as the Gators beat Callaway 46-45 on Friday for a big boys’ basketball win in MHSAA Region 2-6A.

The Gators (10-11, 2-4 Region 2-6A) won their second game in a row to move into a tie for third place in Region 2-6A, after starting the week in last. They also beat Callaway for the sixth consecutive time after losing 27 of 31 meetings over a 16-year span.

Kris Washington also scored nine points for the Gators, and Brycen Jones had seven.

Braxton Ward had 13 of his game-high 17 points in the third quarter for Callaway (8-14, 1-5).

Vicksburg will play at home on Tuesday against Columbus, the top-ranked team in Class 6A. The girls-boys varsity doubleheader begins at 6 p.m.

The Vicksburg Missy Gators fell behind by 20 points at halftime and couldn’t catch up as they lost to Class 6A powerhouse Callaway (19-3, 5-0 Region 2-6A) on Friday.

Zion Harvey led Vicksburg (12-9, 3-3) with 26 points, four assists and six steals. Cynia Johnson had seven points and 17 rebounds, and Jordan Grace scored nine points.

The Missy Gators were only 14-for-53 (26.4 percent) shooting from the field.
