Vicksburg High hasn’t quite climbed from the bottom to the top of the MHSAA Region 2-6A girls soccer standings, but it has gotten on its feet.

Amari Johnson scored two goals, and the Missy Gators beat Ridgeland 2-1 on Friday in a key region game.

Trinity McGloster and Kennedy Mullins had assists, and Lili Kistler made eight saves in goal.

“The girls executed our game plan tonight. Minimize the turnovers, attack the open space, and capitalize on goal-scoring opportunities,” Vicksburg coach Maurice Gilliam said. “I am very proud of them. We had a great week of preparation. We needed this win.”

The Missy Gators (10-6, 3-4 Region 2-6A) lost four of their first five region games, but have since won two in a row. They’ve clinched a playoff berth and have a shot at the No. 3 seed if they can beat Columbus (2-12-1, 0-7) on the road on Tuesday.

Vicksburg split the season series with Ridgeland (7-9, 4-3), and the head-to-head goal differential tiebreaker is even.

Vicksburg needs to beat Columbus, have Ridgeland lose to Neshoba Cental on Jan. 28, and then have various tiebreakers work in its favor to get the No. 3 seed.
