With winter weather and freezing temperatures expected to impact the Vicksburg area, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. this week is urging all residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves, their homes, and their pets.
“Freezing temperatures can create hazardous conditions, and we want to make sure our residents are prepared,” Flaggs said. “We are working closely with emergency management teams to monitor the situation and respond as needed, but we need everyone to take this weather seriously.”
The City of Vicksburg passed along winter weather safety tips, including:
- Protect People: Limit time outdoors in freezing temperatures, dress in layers, and check on elderly neighbors and those in need.
- Protect Pets: Bring pets inside during freezing temperatures, ensure they have warm shelter if left outdoors, and provide fresh food and water.
- Protect Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip to prevent freezing.
- Prepare for Power Outages: Have flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, and an emergency supply of food and water.
- Use Heating Equipment Safely: Never use ovens or stoves for heat, keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, and ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working.
- Stay Off Icy Roads: If travel is not necessary, stay home and avoid driving on icy or snow-covered roads.
Flaggs said city crews are prepared to respond to icy conditions and ensure the safety of Vicksburg’s roads and infrastructure. Residents should report downed power lines or outages to Entergy and any emergencies to 911.
“As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of our community,” Flaggs said. “Please take precautions, look out for one another, and stay informed as we navigate this winter weather together.”
