It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert E. “Bob” Walters, age 88, on Jan. 17, 2025. A devoted family man, cherished member of Hawkins United Methodist Church, and proud United States Army veteran, Bob lived a life full of faith, service, and love.
Born July 20, 1936, Bob spent his life deeply committed to his family, his faith, and his community. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose love for his family was unconditional and unwavering. He instilled in his loved ones the values of kindness, integrity, and faith, and his legacy will live on in their hearts.
A proud veteran, Bob served in the United States Army. His service to his country was a source of pride for him, and his dedication to others was evident both during his time in the military and throughout his civilian life. After the Army, Bob worked at International Paper for 39 years. Upon retiring he was actively involved in their Quarter Century Society and regularly met for breakfast with other retirees.
Bob was an active and devoted member of Hawkins United Methodist Church, where he served with joy and dedication. His involvement in the church, particularly in the bi-annual BBQ chicken fundraiser, was a true reflection of his heart for service. He played a key role in organizing the event, which supported local missions, and his efforts helped bring the community together to make a lasting impact.
In addition to his faith and service, Bob had a deep love for music and golf. Music was a constant in his life, and he took great joy in sharing it with those around him. Whether listening to his favorite tunes or singing in the church choir, music was a source of comfort and joy. He was also an avid golfer, spending many hours on the course, where he cherished both the game and the friendships he made along the way, as well has having scored three holes-in-one!
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Ann; his children, Mark Walters (Cathy) and Tracey Short (Tim); his grandchildren, Evan Walters, Abigail Harper (Ben), Cade Walters, Zach, Brandon and Chance (Brooklyn) Short; and his great-granddaughters, Elliot Harper, Nevaeh, and Amara Short; as well as extended family members and dear friends. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his spirit, kindness, and faith will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Hawkins United Methodist Church Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at noon. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hawkins United Methodist Church in honor of Bob’s lifelong commitment to serving others.
Though Bob is no longer with us, his love, faith, and service will live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, Bob. You will forever be missed. Your legacy will continue to shine brightly in all who were blessed to know you.
