Hugh L. Green

Hugh L. Green passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025 at the age of 89. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama Aug. 31, 1935 and moved to Tupelo, Mississippi at the age of three. He attended Tupelo public schools and graduated from Tupelo High in 1953. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1957 with a degree in civil engineering and an ROTC commission in the United States Army. He later served in the Army and the Army Reserves having attained the rank of captain.
After graduation he was employed as a professional engineer with the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers for six years and the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station (now ERDC) as a supervisory research civil engineer in military engineering for a total of 35 years. He was a member of numerous professional engineering organizations and received numerous awards for his work while employed there. He held a patent for a landing mat design for military aircraft and received the Department of the Army R&D Award for Technical Merit in 1975.
He was an active member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, serving as Lay Leader, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Staff Parish Committee, Chairman of the Trustees, Chairman of Evangelism and as a member of various other committees. He especially cherished his Tuesday mornings with the Men’s Breakfast Club and his many years with his great friends in the Friendship Sunday School Class. He truly loved Jesus and his church! He was a steadfast man of prayer, and for many years he walked the streets of Marion Park Subdivision and the halls of the assisted living center praying for his family, his neighbors and his world. He was active in the Cursillo/Emmaus movement. De Colores!
In the Vicksburg community, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts as an assistant scout master for 1o years and was awarded the District Award of Merit. He also served through Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, The Warren County Food Pantry, was a River City Rescue Mission board member, a volunteer for the United Way, Red Cross, Good Shepherd Community Center and was a public school mentor.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Joe Ann Blades Green, and his parents, Alise Moffatt Green and Louis E. Green. He is survived by his three sons, Brian H. Green and wife Sally, Stuart B. Green and wife Nan, and Adam L. Green and wife Gina. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Sydney Albritton, Michael Green, Wesley (Jonathan) Josey, Sean (Richie) Scruggs, Meg (Ryan) Craft, Austin Green, and Dillon (Tutu) Green and his seven great-grandchildren: Seth, Haddon and Finley Josey, Dagny and Byron Scruggs, Riley and Patton Craft.
Visitation will be at Crawford Street United Methodist Church from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, with the service to follow at 3 p.m. The Rev. Tom Potter and the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner will be officiating. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Michael Green, Jonathan Josey, Sean Scruggs, Ryan Craft, Austin Green and Dillon Green. Honorary Pallbearers are Richard Cowart, Jimmy Turner, Allen Hudspeth, John Black, Bob Pitts, Wade West, Bobby Fleming, Bob Moss, Herb Wilkinson, Paul Barnes and the members of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Donations may be made to the CSUMC Children’s Ministry, the S.O.S. Program or to a charity of your choice.
