VSA swimmers excel at winter meet

A little cold didn’t stop the Vicksburg Swim Association from heating up the pool.

The VSA’s Killer Whales club team won five events, placed in the top three in 18, and posted 17 state meet qualifying times at the DAC Charlene Craddock Invitational that was held Jan. 17 and 18. in Cleveland.

Addison Billings led the way with 140 total points and three victories in the girls 12U 50 yard breaststroke, 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard individual medley. She also had four second-place finishes and five state qualifying times.

James McKenna won the boys’ open 200 yard freestyle, and was second in the 100 yard butterfly and 200 yard backstroke.

Shelby Williams scored 83 points in the girls’ 12U division, with four second-place finishes and a Class BB state qualifying time that will allow her to compete at the Mississippi Swimming Short Course State Championship in February.

Williams finished second in the 50 yard breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 100 IM.

Other top performers for the VSA included Kara Rowe, who placed in the top five in five of her seven events; Mason Poole, who had give top-eight finishes and scored 69 points; and Ella Opperman, who was in the top eight in all four of her events, scored 50 points, and qualified for the state short course meet.

The VSA will compete in one more regular season meet Feb. 1 and 2, before travelling to Biloxi for the MS Swimming Short Course State Championships Feb. 13-16.
