JACKSON — Mississippi’s deer hunters will have a couple of extra days to stock their freezers.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) announced that it has extended the 2024-25 either-sex white-tailed deer season an extra two days, to 30 minutes after sunset on Feb. 2.
The extension applies to private lands only in the Delta, Hills, and North Central Deer Management Units (DMUs). Warren, Claiborne, Jefferson and Hinds counties are all split between the Delta and Hills DMUs. Sharkey, Issaquena and Yazoo are all in the Delta DMU.
The Southeast DMU, which includes 15 counties in the southeastern corner of the state, is not included in the extension. Its deer season will still end on Feb. 15.
The decision was made through a provision in state law that allows the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks to extend the season when it is scheduled to end on a Friday. It is valid for the 2024-25 season only. This seaosn had originally been scheduled to end on Jan. 31.
The season extension shall only apply to season dates and does not increase or otherwise affect the annual bag limit. MDWFP encourages hunters to exercise their bag limit, particularly antlerless deer, and submit any deer taken during these additional days to be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).
