“We came out tonight and played the best defense we’ve played all year. We rebounded the ball spectacularly,” St. Al coach Walter Hallberg said. “If we continue to play this kind of basketball over the next few weeks we’re going to surprise some people in the postseason.”

St. Al (13-8, 2-2 MAIS District 4-5A) played two games on back-to-back nights and won both to even its district record. It’s now in second place in District 4-5A, with two more league games against first-place Copiah Academy on Tuesday and Cathedral on Jan. 30. Both are on the road.

“I just want to say a big thank you to our fans,” Hallberg said. “We had a great crowd show up (Friday) and everyone was loud and engaged the whole game. It’s a great night to be a Flash.”

In Friday’s junior high boys’ game, ACCS beat St. Al 44-30. Dru Gleese scored 18 points for St. Al, Grant Gattle had six points and five rebounds, and Patrick Southerland grabbed 11 rebounds.

Vicksburg (11-12, 2-5) had a three-game winning streak snapped on the first night of a busy stretch of games. It has to turn around and play at home against Columbus Saturday at 4 p.m. in a game postponed from earlier in the week because of weather, and then will play at home Tuesday night vs. Ridgeland.
