By the numbers: Assaults down in December, auto thefts increase

The monthly release of crime statistics from the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) shows a significant drop in aggravated assaults in December, but an increase in auto thefts across the city.

According to numbers for December, aggravated assaults – the charge most often levied against suspects accused of crimes involving firearms – was down 57% with three incidents versus seven in November. 

Auto thefts, however, were up 67% in December with five incidents versus three in November.

Other stats for December included: 

  • A 6% drop in auto burglaries, including an overall drop from 18 in November to 17 in December; a drop from 10 to seven in burglaries of secured vehicles; an increase from eight to 10 in burglaries of unsecured vehicles.
  • A 32% drop in domestic violence incidents with 13 in December, down from 19 in November.
  • Two instances of business burglaries, up from none reported in November.
  • Four instances of robbery, up from none reported in November.
  • No instances for murder, manslaughter, rape, carjacking or kidnapping. There were also no reports of any such crimes in November.
