Vicksburg High’s girls’ soccer team once again had the misfortune of having a good season end at the hands of an opponent that often has the best one.
Saltillo scored three goals in each half, and eased its way to a 6-0 victory over the Missy Gators in the first round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs on Tuesday.
Saltillo (19-1-1), the two-time defending state champion, advanced to face Ridgeland (9-10) in the second round on Saturday. Ridgeland beat Grenada in another first round game on Tuesday, 1-0.
Vicksburg finished with a 13-7 record and reached the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Each time, it has lost to Saltillo in the playoffs.
“The girls played a great game. We had some good shots on goal but came up just short,” Vicksburg coach Maurice Gilliam said. “I’m incredibly thankful for my seniors and their leadership, hard work, and commitment. I’m also extremely proud of the progress we’ve made over the last two years. Coaching this team has been an amazing experience. The girls never quit even when the game seems as if it has gotten away from us.”
