U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran’s campaign for a seventh term in Washington swung through Vicksburg on Tuesday.

The senator’s tour bus took him to the River City for a fundraiser lunch at Walnut Hills, then talked all things funding with Mayor George Flaggs Jr. The mayor mentioned the senator’s visit during a brief address at American Legion Post 213 on Main Street after the organization’s national commander spoke.

Cochran toured the Port of Vicksburg with Warren County Port Commission director Wayne Mansfield and, later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities in the city.

The entrenched senator is locked in a heated primary fight with state Sen. Chris McDaniel, R-Ellisville, whose campaign has been buoyed by right-leaning factions within the GOP. Both sides have hit the airwaves and television with attack ads. The primary is June 3. The lone announced Democrat in the race is Bill Marcy, of Vicksburg.

Cochran’s principal campaign committee entered 2013 with a tad more than $1.1 million in cash on hand, according filings with the Federal Election Commission. The principal committee for McDaniel had raised $561,279 by year’s end. The next campaign finance reporting deadline is May 22.  The general election is Nov. 4.
