The Bubba Mims era at Porters Chapel got off to a rousing start.

The Eagles (3-3) got 161 yards rushing from Jeremiah Riggs to 161 yards on 19 carries, including a 58-yard touchdown run in the deciding third quarter as the Eagles beat Pine Hills, 20-13, to give Mims his first win as the head coach.

Mims replaced Jim Sizemore as coach last week.

“Our guys played with a lot of heart and they played good,” Mims said. “We got together at halftime, made a couple adjustments and they paid off.”

Riggs also had a stellar defensive game with 13 tackles and two quarterback sacks. Heath Smith’s blocked punt, which was picked up by Chris Simms and returned 37 yards for a touchdown, gave PCA an early 7-0 lead.

Pine Hills (1-5), coached by former Eagles’ assistant Andy Hopkins, scored in the first quarter on a 21-yard pass to send the game into the half tied at 7.

Riggs’ 58-yard touchdown run on the fifth play of the third quarter gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead, which the never relinquished.

Allen Pugh, PCA’s field goal kicker for two years, connected on the first two tries of his career from 35 and 39 yards out. Both field goals came in the third as the Eagles built a 20-13 lead. Pugh also connected on both extra points.

Dustin Abbott had 81 yards rushing and Smith had two catches for 74 yards from Kyle Ehrhardt, who had 81 yards on four completions.

PCA will face its toughest test of the season Friday night against Tallulah Academy (5-1), which beat Chamberlain-Hunt Friday night.
