ETHEL BARNES

Services for Ethel “Ree” Barnes will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Miss Barnes died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 47.

Miss Barnes was employed at Beechwood Elementary School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Coleman and Della Barnes.

She is survived by three daughters, Natosha Barnes, Sandra Barnes and Forice Barnes, all of Vicksburg; two brothers, Dan Barnes Jr. and Willie Barnes, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Minerva King of Compton, Calif., and Marietta Bells Moore of Vicksburg; four grandchildren; and other relatives, including Mary Ann Gordon of Detroit and members of the Griffin, Dotson, Smith, Green, Wilson, Chiplin, Knox, Williams and Wash families of Vicksburg.

BOBBY FARMER

Bobby Farmer died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 61.

Born in Crystal Springs, Mr. Farmer lived in Vicksburg for 37 years. He had a mechanical engineering degree from Mississippi State University.

He was chief of the Revetment Section of the Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, where he had been employed for 36 years. He had worked at Waterways Experiment Station and in the Savannah District in the South Atlantic Division. He assisted in the planning, design and construction of three new quarterboats and other vessels used by the mat sinking unit.

He and his wife, Jeanette “Jan” Farmer, were dancers with the Capital City Chasers of Jackson. He was a member of Hawkins United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Agnes Farmer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Julia Phyfer of Jackson; two sons, Michael Farmer and Kimble Farmer, both of Vicksburg; a brother, David Farmer of Jackson; and a granddaughter, Zo Peyton Phyfer of Jackson.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hawkins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Hedgepeth officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 Thursday night at Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bob Walters, Dennis Norris, Bobby LaGrone, Newell Murphy, Pete Phifer and Paul S. Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Becomers Sunday School class of Hawkins United Methodist Church.

ERNEST FAULKNER

Ernest Faulkner died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Whispering Pines Hospice in Ridgeland. He was 94.

Born in Panola County, Mr. Faulkner lived in Vicksburg from 1938 until 1991, when he moved to Jackson.

He retired after 36 years as a cost accountant with the federal government. He had also been a secretary for a West Virginia coal company and taught one year in Panola County Schools. Mr. Faulkner had been a member of Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church for 50 years, serving as a deacon and choir member. He also taught Sunday school. He was a member of West Park Methodist Church in Jackson and had become a member of Alta Woods Methodist Church.

He was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association and Vicksburg Gun Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin J. and Lou Shuford Faulkner, and a wife, Tessie Faulkner.

Survivors include his wife, Avie M. Faulkner of Jackson; a son, Donald Faulkner of Madison; a brother, Charles Reeves of San Antonio; one granddaughter, Katherine Faulkner Lott of Hattiesburg; nieces; and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Seefeld officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. Visitation will be until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tillman Whatley, B.C. Smithhart, B.L. Hamill, Clyde Posey and A.D. Warnock. Honorary pallbearers will be Robbie Cummins, Mike Lloyd, Steve Lloyd and the Builders Sunday school class.

JAMES A. MALLETT

PORT GIBSON James A. Mallett died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Mississippi State Veterans Nursing Home in Jackson. He was 77.

A native of Jackson, Mr. Mallett was a retired mortician. He was a veteran of World War II and attended Jackson State College and Gupton and Jones School of Mortuary science in Nashville.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Mallett.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie E. Mallett of Port Gibson; a son, James W. Mallett of Port Gibson; three daughters, Bobbie J. Mallett of College Park, Md., Betty A. Mallett of Jackson and Patricia Mallett-Herbert of Ranson, W.Va.; a sister, Annie Mae Jones of Urban Crest, Ohio; a brother, Robert L. Mallett of Jackson; seven grandchildren and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thompson Memorial Garden Cemetery in Port Gibson with T.E. Harris officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.

MAXINE MARSALIS

Maxine Marsalis died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 73.

Born in Painton, Mo., Mrs. Marsalis had lived in Vicksburg for 52 years. During World War II, she was in the Women’s Army Corps. She formerly worked at McRae’s and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Marsalis; her mother, Ida Mae Bell Smith Morgan; and her stepfather, George Revell.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Slade of Vicksburg and Christine Waters of Baldwin County, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Morris officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 Thursday night at Glenwood.

Pallbearers will be Ron Waters, Lynn McLeod, Jonathan Waters, Aaron Waters, Tommy Wixson, Watson Marsalis and George Slade.

RUFUS MIMS JR.

Services for Rufus “Goody” Mims Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Mims died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 87.

Mr. Mims was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.

He was a member of American Legion Tyner-Ford Post No. 213.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lenora Washington Mims; his parents, Rufus Mims Sr. and Lula Nailor Mims; and two brothers, Irwin Mims and Herbert Mims.

Survivors include three sons, Nathaniel Washington of Vicksburg, Leroy Goody Gaines of Los Angeles and Rufus Mims III of Baton Rouge; daughters Sandra Mims, Felicia D. Mims and Delores R. Mims, all of Vicksburg; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and others.
