ESTELLA DEVOILS

Estella Devoils died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 47.

A lifelong resident of the Ballground community, Mrs. Devoils was a member of Mount Zion M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lee Williams.

Survivors include one son, Robert Lee Devoils of Vicksburg; her father and stepmother, L.C. and Ruby Dotson of Vicksburg; two grandchildren; and other relatives including Donald Jeffery of Vicksburg.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

GEORGE HOLMES

ROLLING FORK George Holmes died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. He was 85.

He is survived by six sons, Willie Holmes of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, David Holmes of Joliet, Ill., Charles Konch of Houston, Texas, L.C. Holmes of Mound Bayou, James Washington of Rolling Fork and Carl Powell of Jackson; four daughters, Betty Callocote of Chicago, Alveria Smith and Velma Jordon, both of Everette, Wash., and Jackie Tubwell of Vicksburg; one sister, Rosie Martin of Rolling Fork; and 29 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Baptist M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Rolling Fork under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

BERTHA HAAS KLEISDORF

Bertha Haas Kleisdorf died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 97.

A native of Mexico, Mo., she had lived in Vicksburg for the past 61 years. She was the daughter of the late William and Sophie Laudenheimer Haas. A graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., she had been deputy chancery clerk in Missouri and, after moving to Vicksburg, she was a salesperson at the Valley Department Store.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Kleisdorf.

Survivors include a sister, Gladys Haas Ballard of Oakland, Calif.; a niece, Bettie Minette Cooper of Norfolk, Va.; a nephew, Jorgen Kleisdorf of Copenhagen, Denmark; three great-nephews, Neil Cooper and Jeff Cooper, both of Los Angeles, Erik Cooper of Norfolk; a great-great-niece, Hannah Cooper of Norfolk; and a great-great-nephew, Tanen Cooper of Norfolk.

Fisher-Riles Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

ROGER PATTEN

LORMAN Roger Patten died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 40.

Mr. Patten was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary Patten, and a brother, Cornelious Patten.

He is survived by six brothers, Nathan Winfield, Charles Patten Jr., Eddie Lee Patten and Carl Thomas Patten, all of Akron, Ohio, and Ernest Patten and Aaron Patten, both of Lorman; three sisters, Ruth Hall and Mary Louise Brown, both of Lorman, and Erma P. Shaifer of Port Gibson; aunts; nieces; other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morning Star M.B. Church. Burial will follow at McCaa Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 6 tonight at Rollins Funeral Home Chapel of Port Gibson.

Pallbearers will be Claude Herrington, Eddie Dotson, Greg Brown, David Brown, Eddie Patten Jr. and Eric Patten.

JOHN WESLEY SCOTT JR.

ST. JOSEPH John Wesley Scott Jr. died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at his home in St. Joseph. He was 81.

Mr. Scott had lived most of his life in St. Joseph, where he was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He had worked as an electrical communications and television repairman and was an artillery veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Helen Ricks Scott of St. Joseph; four sons, John Wesley Scott III of Farmington, Mo., Gerald A. Scott of St. Francisville, La., Fred E. Scott of St. Joseph and David W. Scott of Shreveport; one brother, William Eugene Scott of Hammond, La.; two sisters, Dot Curry of St. Joseph and Jane Gould of Sulphur, La.; and two grandchildren, Dawn Scaife of Plano, Texas, and Todd Eugene Scott of St. Joseph.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton with the Rev. James Dennis officiating. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Jones, Edwin Blanch, Ricky Jones, Ernest Hestle, Ricky Foster and David W. Scott.

RUFUS WASHINGTON

JACKSON, Ala. Services for Rufus Washington will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church in Bovina with the Rev. Elzie O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, Ala.

Mr. Washington died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, in Jackson, Ala. He was 58.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Washington was a former employee of Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Washington and Melissa Wilson; three sisters, Rosie Lee Turner, Idella Gee and Sophia Wallace; and two brothers, George Washington and William Washington Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Gayda Gates of Jackson; four daughters, Catherine Washington and Quantina Washington, both of Jackson, and Beaulisa Washington Miller and Cassandra L. Washington, both of Chicago; one son, Timothy Washington of Compton, Calif.; three sisters, Williona James and Katie Mae Robinson, both of Vicksburg, and Viola Neal of Utica; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other families including the Franklin and Goodman families of Vicksburg.

Pallbearers will be Bennie Wilson, Robert Miller, Derrick Christmas, Donald Reed Jr., Leroy Christmas and David Reed Jr.
