JAMES WALTER BURKS

EDWARDS James Walter “J.W.” Burks died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home. He was 86.

A lifelong resident of Edwards, Mr. Burks was a deacon of Springtidge M.B. Church. He owned and operated Burks’ Grocery Store and farmed for several years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Joshua Rose of Sharon No. 320, Heroines of Jericho.

He served on the board of directors of the Hubbard Water

Association, the Farmers’ Home Association and was past

worshipful master of the Rohelia Lodge No. 415, M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge. He was also an agent for Dillon Burial Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lula M. Burks of Edwards; a son, Martin Burks of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Mattie Kelly of Utica and Rose Lockett of Jackson; and other relatives

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

EDDIE LEWIS JR.

PORT GIBSON Services for Eddie Lewis Jr. will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Magnolia M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Lewis Road Cemetery in Port Gibson under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Repast will follow the services at First Baptist Church in Port Gibson.

Mr. Lewis died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 90.

Mr. Lewis retired from B.C. Crum Logging Company, Port Gibson Oil Works and Port Gibson Veneer and Box Company. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Port Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leatta Moore-Lewis and Eddie Lewis Sr.; three brothers, Roosevelt Lewis, Fred Lewis and M.H. Lewis; and two sisters, Ida Bell Lewis Hedricks and Geneva Lewis King; and a granddaughter, Myra Nicole Floyd.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Giles Lewis of Port Gibson; four daughters, Shirley F. Lewis of Port Gibson, Ella Lewis Selmon of Vicksburg, Jessie M. Lewis of Battle Creek, Mich., and Flora Jean Lewis Gilliam of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Charles Lewis and Vernon Lewis of Port Gibson; his sister, Rosetta Leasy of Port Gibson; and 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

ESTELLA MAYFIELD

Estella Mayfield died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was 97.

A homemaker, Mrs. Mayfield was a member of Greater Mount Zion M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mayfield Sr.; a daughter, Vernell Mayfield; her parents, Charlie and Alice Williams; and her brother, Felix Brown.

Survivors include her son, James Mayfield Jr. of Vicksburg; her daughter, Estella Mayfield Crawford; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of the arrangements.

SCOTT WILLIAM MURRAY

BRANDON Scott William Murray died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, as the result of a motorcycle accident. He was 27.

Born in Hazlehurst, Mr. Murray was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg until four years ago when he moved to Brandon. He was a graduate of Warren Central High School. He was self-employed as a Snap-On Tool dealer for the past four years. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his parents, Shelby Dean and Peggy Ann Murray of Vicksburg; two brothers, Shelby Dean Murray Jr. of Hattiesburg and Christopher Murray of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Fisher-Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

JOHN ANDREW NOLAN

TALLULAH Services for John Andrew Nolan will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Tallulah with the Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Mr. Nolan died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah. He was 52.

He was born and reared in Tallulah, where he worked as a shipping manager for API. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra J. Nolan of Vicksburg; two sons, Andrew Kenneth Nolan and Justin Allen Wilson, both of Tallulah; one daughter, Emily Elizabeth Nolan of Stewart, Fla.; his mother, Ramona Nolan Scott of Tallulah; one brother, Ramon Nolan of Richland, Miss.; three sisters, Mona Hodnett of Vicksburg, Susan Keyes of Tallulah and Sandi Watkins of Tallulah.

Pallbearers will be Randy Ramshur, Robbie Watkins, Edgar Keyes, Michael Mobley, Tony Hodnett and Craig Clark.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rich Ramshur, Randy Godwin and Paul Meeks.

HELEN N. PRUITT

Helen N. Pruitt died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at her home. She was 74.

Born in West Point, Miss Pruitt had lived in Vicksburg for the past seven years. She was a retired employee of Westinghouse.

Survivors include two brothers, Dillard Pruitt of Amory and Ed Pruitt of Tupelo; four sisters, Barbara King of Greenville, Louise McClure of Demopolis, Ala., and Lib Vickers and Eva Tounson, both of Jackson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery with the Revs. Jackie Kackley and Charles Kackley officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
